Mexican environmenal authorities achnowledged the contribution of Xcaret Park of Cancún and the Riviera Maya to the rescue and rehabilitation of animals which have been stranded, injured or confiscated from their owners for violations to environmental legislation.
The representative of the federal Environmental Protection Agency (PROFEPA) for the state of Quintana Roo, Ludivina Menchaca, said that there have been individuals and private-sector businesses who have helped to protect exemplars of wildlife in high-risk situations and that, thanks to this, these animals have had a chance to survive and return to the wild or remain in safe and healthy refuges. “Xcaret has been a major ally in the care of wild fauna in Quintana Roo,” said the official during the event organized by the PROFEPA.
The park’s wildlife manager, Rodolfo Raigoza Figueras received the award on behalf of the park and expressed his gratitude for the distinction from the federal authorities. Over the last ten years, the PROFEPA has asked Xcaret to safeguard 168 specimens belonging to over 45 different species, including their care, feeding, rehabilitation and return to the wild where possible.
Of the animals entrusted to Xcaret, many have been returned to the wild, others have been assigned to refuges in accordance with instructions from governmental authorities. while still others have remained in the nature park, where they receive the care they need to thrive.
Among the species that have been entrusted to Xcaret are the ocellated turkey and the Yucatecan black howler monkey, as well as species of crocodile, deer, pumas, jaguars, falcons, turtles, and ocelots, among many others.

Of special interest is the sea turtle program, which was implemented in coordination with the PROFEPA. In just over ten years, 465 green, hawksbill and loggerhead turtles have been rescued, cared for and returned to the sea. Nineteen others remain in Xcaret for ongoing care and full rehabilitation.
